I have been doing positive affirmations on self esteem and confidence as I have a negative self image since my teens...I am 24 now,male...I have a recorded positive 1st person present tense affirmations CD.Now everytime I fall asleep listening to it at night,I see these terrifying scary creatures, something like straight out of a gory horror movie, lots of blood..today,i saw 2 huge ugly dragons/serpents fighting each other and i woke up,my heart was racing. Is it my subconscious mind resisting the new positive thoughts/suggestions?

Also, long time back, when I wasn't doing this affirmation thing,I used to pray before bed..Even then,I had these nightmares....When I did none of the above, dreams were normal.

What is going on?

I agree. You're trying to help yourself but this is seated deep in your subconscious that you 'can't', and your mind is going through internal struggles to try to get you to move forward.

It's basically just your fears manifesting. I know it's not the best thing to have happen to you while you sleep, but the mere fact that it IS happening means your mind IS dealing with the fact that something has to change.

Try this--- keep doing the affirmations (as they ARE moving you forward) but just before you sleep, tell yourself that 'things may be scary, but I can handle them, I'm only moving forward in small steps at first and will take the bigger ones a little later'. This offers your subconscious a 'way out' in that you're not needing to do ALL of this all at once.

You can do it. Small steps end up always turning into bigger steps as you get confident. Your mind will catch up with you.

Your subconscious mind may be rejecting the affirmations as unrealistic --if the affirmations are not congruent with your self image. The affirmations are a wonderful tool, however, they must be carefully worded so that your SCM can accept the ideas instead of fight them off.

Try repeating these affirmations during the day and then give some thought to how such statements make you react/feel. Find out which emotions or thoughts are activated, then tweak as necessary.

I don't think that it's abnormal for someone your age to have some dreams that seem horrifying. If you assume that each creature represents a part of yourself how would you interpret the dream? For example, I think a dream that may occur for someone your age is a dream of someone killing someone else. Even though it may seem to be a horrifying dream, I would interpret that dream as a sign that a part of you (that you no longer need) is dying and is being replaced by something else. I would think this could be a positive sign that you have outgrown the person that you once were and are now moving into a new phase of your life.

The internal struggle is due to conflicting energies of opposite polarity intruding on your conscious mind. The old you is desperately trying to maintain its hold over you and the new energy of positive affirmations is resisting it. This ought to pass in time. Don't give up on reinforcing the positive.
