Regarding witchcraft - can a witch be Catholic? Do they believe in God and/or heaven?

I am a catholic and I swear my sicilian grandmother was a bit of a witch, and my mom and I too. We all have (or had as my mom and grams have passed) strong psychic abilities.

Also, I have seen answers by people who say they are pagans but refer to heaven and hell. Can someone please explain this to me? What is the difference between a pagan and a witch?

Please give me honest and insightful answers. I just want to broaden my knowledge on these subjects. Links would be helpful. Thank you all!

Of course it can and even moreso in your case. Many, many Italians combine elements of Catholicism and Witchcraft and have done so for centuries. Herbal remedies, regional folklore, statues of the saints, and pagan talismans were as common in our house as salt. Two books I would highly recommend are Italian Witchcraft and Ways of the Strega. Both are by Raven Grimassi.

Pagan (pagani-country dweller) is a person who follows a spiritual path other than the Abrahamic religions. It is a word that encompasses Wicca, Asatru, Shamanism, Druidism, etc. A witch is a person (male or female) that practices the Craft in at least one of it's many disciplines. They can be herbology, healing, divination, etc.

I do not believe in heaven, hell, or any evil entity known as satan or the devil. I do however honor both God & Goddess and take my beliefs very seriously.

Well, first off, Witchcraft is a practice; it's not a power, and it's not being psychic. Just because a person is psychic (as we all are to some extent) doesn't mean they practice Witchcraft.



People get confused and interchange them because part of practicing Witchcraft is disciplining your mind and learning to hone your intuitive abilities, so these things are often associated with Witches. However, being psychic alone is not practicing Witchcraft.



As for Pagans-- Paganism is a huge umbrella term that, depending on your definition of Pagan, many religions fall under. I've not known of a lot of Pagans who believe in either Heaven or Hell, but I couldn't say it isn't possible.



Paganism refers to various religions... whereas Witchcraft is not a religion, but a practice. Pagan religions are often accepting of the practice of Witchcraft, so many Witches may consider themselves Pagan and practice their craft along with their spirituality. However, not every Pagan chooses to be a Witch. And, not every Witch considers him/herself Pagan-- some Witches consider themselves Christian, some even consider themselves Atheists.



As for whether a Catholic can practice Witchcraft-- depends on who you ask. The official Catholic Church stance would be no, and would consider anyone practicing Witchcraft a heretic. But, there are Catholic Witches... they practice the Craft and remain Catholic and think it is fine (though they could be ex-communicated for that, but in this day and age it is not common for the church to go through that process).

I d just like to add that you can be a natural witch and not practice Witchcraft. A natural witch is in tune with nature and is very aware of her surroundings. I was born and raised Catholic and still am and so was my mother. I have animals naturally follow me, I get signs all the time through nature such as birds sitting by my feet and such and spirits seem to hang around me. I have the ability to smell them, flowers, perfume, dirt. I also have psychic ability as well but I don t curse or hex people. I do pray with candles sometimes but that s about it. You choose how you want to move forward.

Simple answer: Paganism is very large range or religions, such as Wicca, Norse Paganism, Druidism, Shamanism etc. A witch is anyone who practices witchcraft, A pagan/Wiccan/(any pagan religion) can be a witch if they Practice Witchcraft. not all witches are Wiccan's or Pagans. not all Wiccan's or Pagans are witches

A witch can be associated with any Religion. Yes, the majority of witches do believe in God but fewer believe in heaven.



A pagan is a person who has religious beliefs other than those of the main world religions.



A witch is generally a woman who follows or practice the art of witchcraft. They are also called sorceress, enchantress, Wiccans etc. etc.



I do believe your grandmother was very familiar with the art of witchcraft. I say this because many women who were raised prior to the year 1920 used potions and remedies to cure illness or cast evil spirits. In my opinion, they were better than some of the physicians we have now and I might add, ony charged what you were willing to give.

Sure. Many Christians (and probably people of other faiths) have held on to pagan rituals and beliefs. Christmas tress, Easter bunnys/eggs, Friday the 13th, fingers crossed, saying "bless you" after a sneeze, etc all have pagan origins and are practiced by Christians. I don't see why it can't work the other way around.



Even the "metal horns" made popular by Ronnie James Dio and thought by many to be the sign of Satan was used to ward off or give the evil eye by his (Catholic Sicilian) grandmother.

The mixing of religions is quite common, especially mixing religions with folk magic, in fact much of the church was built on folk magic and traditions.

Paganism is a pretty broad religion that incorporates many tradtions. The definition you recieve will be different for everyone.

Paganism is the religion and withcraft is a practice, like praying.

Not all Pagans are witch's, but most are.

How can you worship God and satan at the same time?



You can't. Either your heart is for God, or the evil one.



Now, there are people who pretend to be "catholics" for appearance's sake, and are otherwise. I'm not sure why, but that is the way it is.



Psychic, curses, paganism, that all leads to witchcraft and the devil. I am not insulting you but it is.



The Holy Spirit will leave you if you practice these things.



EDIT: You just indicated that grams and mom could cast curses against people....... enough said. God will not help those who cast curses against people, meaning the curses that they cursed will not be lifted, unless the person is truly repenetant goes to Confession, and refrains from the dark arts.



EDIT II: Look at the mafia. They would go to church, make the Sign of the Cross, and go around killing families, wreaking havoc, and so much more. Is that a true Catholic? Is that what a Catholic is supposed to act like? Pleas think about it.

as I do not consider the teaching of the "catholics" to be Christian I would have to say it may be possible.... it is NOT possIble for any one of The True Christian Faith to be a "witch", wiccan or otherwise... God's position on witchcraft is quite clear.
