The purple people, or Purpurae, were an early pre-celtic tribe mentioned only in Smorgasbordsaga, where they are described as commonly using an indigo woad derived from the bark of the Blue Oak (Quercus Bilius).
This provoked hallucinations such that they believed themselves capable of flight, and so were given to hurling themselves over cliffs.
The saga records that a one-eyed horse would appear at these moments and devour them as they fell.
