I am a fairly new follower of Asatru. I put my beliefs that the symbol "Valknut" Is a symbol of the afterlife, and pagan holy-places. I just found out that some racist groups wear this as a sign as well. How do I handle explaining that if confronted? I am not racist in any way.

Yes it a symbol of the dead or the slain, although its exact meaning has never really been determined... The # 3 is a mystical # in many cultures, even though the Vikings heralded the # 9 as being the most significant #..The nine worlds, nine days Odinn hung from Yggdrasil, where he learned 9 powerful songs and 18 runes...

I have never heard of any groups wearing the Valknut , but I live in Aussie and we don't have the dramas here that you have, wherever you are from obviously...

Wear you Valknut with pride and if some clown accosts you for it, simply say it is an ancient and sacred symbol to the religion I follow and that my religion is far older than any neo-racist, or whatever group which may have adopted our symbol in recent times... Make sure you are diplomatic as you don't want to get yourself into a violent situation...

I have a white Valknut at the bottom of my shield, in the middle, below the boss, with both Odinn's ravens above the boss, each side, that is my "signature",a sort of coat of arms" so to say...

Follow you path with your head held high...

Hann til ragnaroks...

Point out to them that racism isn't part of the Asatru religion and that those racist groups that use the symbol (along with the Hammer and any other nordic religious symbols they have tried to pervert since th 1930's) have no REAL understanding of what the symbol means. Also, most racist groups don't even follow the Asatru religion in any way and only use its symbology because they think they are supposed to.

The Valknut is a symbol of commitment to Odin, those of us that wear it understand that at any time Odin decides he can claim us for the Einheryar. It symbolized a level of devotion and understand that most racists will never have or understand.

You tell them it's a symbol of the God Odin and has been for thousands of years. You say that Odin is not about exclusion or hate, after all, he's called the All Father, not the Some Father. Then you explain that idiots will use any symbol for their hate, after all you don't see KKK burning valknuts on people's lawns.

If you're worried about people confronting you and calling you a racist, you have no business wearing the Vulknut. It is what binds you to Odin, it insures you go to Asgard swiftly. It is worn by the brave, those with a warrior heart. They who wear it can be taken by Odin early. At any time. If you don't want to give your servitude to Odin don't wear the Vulknut. Worthy wearers will test your heart and punish all those who insult Odin by being cowardly.

It is more of a Viking symbol than anything else. You don't need to explain anything, but if you choose to, tell them what you told us.
