You may had an experience with what some people would call a "shadow person" here is a definition from wikipedia:

Shadow people (also known as shadow men, shadow folk, or shadow beings) are said to be shadow like creatures of supernatural origin that appear as dark forms in the peripheries of people's vision and disintegrate, or move between walls, when noticed.[1]

Reports of shadow people are similar to ghost sightings, but differ in that shadow people are not reported as having human features, wearing modern/period clothing, or attempting to communicate. Witnesses also do not report the same feelings of being in the presence of something that 'was once human'. Some individuals have described being menaced, chased, or in some rare instance, attacked by shadow people. There have also been reports of shadow people appearing in front of witnesses, of which they stay there or lingering for several seconds before disappearing. Witnesses report that encounters are typically accompanied by a feeling of dread

Reports of shadow people have existed throughout history. The observer generally reports seeing a dark shadow that resembles the form of a human which appears and moves of its own accord. The figures does not have distinguishable facial features and may be either much smaller or larger than a human. They are often noticed as movement from the corner of the eye, sometimes disappearing when the observer turns to investigate.

Shadow people may move quickly across a room, usually disappearing through the wall or closed door. Many report a feeling of extreme dread or fear accompanying the sighting. Others have reported that when the shadow moves across their physical being a feeling of extreme cold overcomes their body. This sensation of coldness disappears once the apparition is gone.

Many believe that shadow people are the ghost of someone who has passed on but is not able to leave this physical world for some reason. Others believe that shadow people are creatures of another dimension that somehow overlaps our own, causing it to be partially visible. Many have captured images of what they believe to be shadow people in photographs.

Other paranormal enthusiast believe that shadow people were never human at all and are a demonic spirit that embodies pure evil. Some have reported seeing glowing red eyes, but generally shadow people appear as a simple form that resembles the human form. Some report the presence of a hat or cape. One thing in common is that shadow people often try to avoid detection and like to observe from corners of the room, usually at night.

Here is another article: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/362588/hauntings_what_are_shadow_people.html

Shadow people have been observed in daylight and many have observed them in full vision, although it is common to catch a sighting from the corner of the eye.

that was very likely a dream. it's much easier to sleep when you think you can't than you think! thinking you can't sleep means that you are uncomfortable or your mind is too active. perhaps too much heat or you woke up late so you aren't tired? it's nothing to do with not being able to sleep, it's thinking you can't. However, when you really think you can't sleep, your mind may stay semi-conscious while your body sleeps. Your brain is still concentrating on what it was thinking but you are asleep. Because you are semi conscious your brain, rather than pick up information, has to make it's own. Thus strange things happen. Many times I have been awake in mind and be thinking about things then suddenly theres a weird feeling like being zapped and I realize I have been sleeping for an hour. because my mind was in a semi conscious state. I assume that is what happened with you. however, there is a more worrying alternative. You may have been visited by a demon or even (I know this sounds silly) and alien. if it was a demon it would have smiled because of your fear. If an alien, it might have smiled because you are as alien to them as they are to you and to see a moving specimen might have amazed it. Perhaps you need to go into more detail as well, you saw the creature, ran, found the doors locked then what? If you cannot remember it was most likely a dream, although it might be the mind forgetting to relieve you of unnecessary stress. However, I worry about you whatever it is, dream, demon or alien. To dream of a monster means that you have misfortune just around the corner. Also, the monster might have represented something about yourself that you aren't happy with, which could be a boil or disfigurement to worry or fear. If it's an actual demon, try to be a better person and for certain you will need to ask for gods help as you will stand no chance against a demon alone. If it's an alien, don't worry too much, but prepare yourself for more visits, electronics breaking down, appearing somewhere you don't know with time having sped up (worst case scenario) or ven waking up on an alien ship. However, don't worry about aliens being evil, the sci-fi programmes on the television are nonsense.

In closing, you might have to wait and see, perhaps re-live the experience through hypnotism if you start to forget, I would suggest asking for gods help (assuming you are Christian) and watch out for misfortune around the corner. IMPORTANT if it keeps happening, keep some sort of comfort or even a non illegal weapon with you when you go to bed, like a fruit knife and VERY IMPORTANT (again assuming you are christian) keep a holy cross ender your bed. if you see it again, don't run if you can help it (it's a scary creature, I can imagine it right now, with black lumpy sin and a sickening smile and you could almost expect it to jump out if I have the right image in my mind) try and ask what (or who) he is and DON'T ANGER IT! rather than say "what the hell are you and why the f*** are you here" try saying "WHO are you and why have you come here" you can ask it politely to leave if it is civilized. if it won't go and if it is a demon use the cross and say "the power of Christ compels you" or something to let god know that you want him to rid the beast from your home. Even keep a camera by your bed to get a picture of it, although it might be difficult.

if theres any updates, like you see it again, post another question with the updates so I can narrow down the possibilities.

UPDATE: I wouldn't have thought it would be a shadow person, from what I have read they have no facial figures but it might be possible.

Likely dreaming, maybe night terrors. I used to get dreams like that (still do sometimes in fact), but they are dreams. You may have been in semi-sleep mode, you were dreaming but still close to waking consciousness. It happens a lot if you're tired but unable to sleep. Try to identify where you might have gotten the idea for the critter's appearance from, that usually helps resolve the residual creepy feelings.

I have never encountered an ET,but who knows, could of been an ET,or a demon.I would not rule out anything. While I have not seen any ET's I still believe they exist, and so do demons .
