I am doing a presentation in Language Arts about Atalanta and need to dress like her. What would she have worn? (I am making the costume myself)

Ok, I like the idea about the tribal apparel and stuff. It's true that Atalanta grew up in the wildrness and forests and was raised by a she-bear, but afterwards she was found by her father and she returned to his palace.

At the time of her race against Meleagros, she was restituted to her princess status. Perhaps you should take a look at Artemis' statues (Atalanta was a worshipper of Artemis), where the huntress goddess is wearing a short chiton, sort of tunic. That would be an apparel giving Atalanta the freedom of movements required for running. Some "tribal" ornaments can supplement the dress, but not if you want to represent her as a runner, for in such case they would be very impractical.

Also, you can click on the link below, which will take you to the photo of a greek hydria (kind of vase) of the 6th century B.C. depicting Atalanta.

I would assume that if she wore anything, it would be a linen chiton belted at the waist and sandals. But that's only from my meager experience in Greek theater with the costumes being as authentic as possible.

In all the artwork I've scene depicting Greek myths, the ones of Atlanta always show her to be mainly naked. In Guido Reni's painting "Atlanta and Hippomenes," Atlanta is naked except for what appears to be a light blue veil kind of billowing around her.

So, if I were to dress up to look like a Greek woman, I would try a chiton or peplos. Both the chiton and peplos are similar to the Roman toga, but not quite.

I do not believe that you would be able to dress like her for a school function. Most of the time she was nude or very lightly dressed. If you want to see an art picture of what she looked like with clothes on, go to

I just don't think you would be able to get away with that in school.

You best bet would be to dress in some kind of hunters or archers outfit. Maybe make some grieves or bracers, a coif, and some chaps of some sort.

You may be able to get away with something like this, it is the modest i could find.
