Question:
In the Disney adaptation of Hercules why didn't Meg become a god?

She did practically the same as Hercules did (risked her life to save his) and wasn't that the reason Hercules achieved godhood? Maybe it's because Hercules had been born a god and Meg hadn't? But then how did all the other gods come to be? Didn't some of them have to overcome obstacles to become a god too? I realize that maybe there is no reason and that it just didn't fit the movie script for Meg to become a god but I was just curious if there was a legitimate reason from Greek history or something that I didn't know about.

Okay, first off Disney rarely sticks to the original story.

Disney's adaptation of Hercules is no exception.

In the Disney movie, Hades promised Hercules that Meg wouldn't get hurt, and in exchange for that promise Hades took Herc's demigod strength for a limited time. He was going to get it back either way. But when Meg was injured, Herc's powers flowed back into him, allowing him to lift the pillar off of her. But she was crushed and dying.

After defeating the Titans Hades reminded Herc of Meg at her last breath.

His last heroic act was diving into the bowels of Hedes to retrieve Meg. That was what made him a God. Meg had no chance of becoming a God, no matter how noble she was, and lets face it, she wasn't. She was in love, and a hero in a sense (since she put herself in harms way to return Herc's powers) but she wasn't the most noble or charismatic character. Not that it would have mattered if she was as greek Gods didn't care for most humans and their vendettas, no matter how illustrious their efforts.

first of all: Hercules was demigod and once a demigod did something great, he was offered immortality. Meg is just some pretty girl that disney stuck in, so there was love. The real story:

Hercules saw a pretty girl, Deiniaria, best guess spelling:), but she was to married to a river god. The dueled over the damsel, and in the end, Hercules got the girl. To make sure Hercules didn't stray away to over women, the damsel put centaur blood in Hercules shirt. The blood was like posion, and Hercules died. The gods brought his ghost back rom underworld and gave him immortality for all of the good deeds and honor he accomplished.

The Gods could turn a mortal into another God but this was rare. Note that Athena, who was very close to Odysseus and help him through great problems, never made him immortal.

There are only 2 stories I know of where Gods turn people immortal. One is the story of Cupid (Eros) and Psyche. Psyche is, after great tribulations, is made immortal by Zeus at Aphrodite's bidding and then the two young lovers (Eros and Psyche) get married.

Hercules WAS NOT born a god. Like Psyche he went through Great Tribulations and was awarded immortality after their successful conclusion.

In the Iliad, Athena is taken with the bravery and strategy used by one warrior (I can't remember who) and She goes to Olympus to get some kind of immortality serum to make him immortal with. But when she returns the fellow has resorted to "blood lust" thinking in his fighting and She was so disgusted that She poured it onto the ground and he never became immortal.

The Gods were not freely making people immortal whenever they like them. The standard was extremely high. Not even Odysseus made it.

She becomes Hercules' girlfriend later on, but at first she was actually supposed to kill Hercules.

I think it's bloodlines, and she wasn't.
