The owl is the symbol of wisdom. Wisdom comes from experience.
The term skylarking is based on the carefree swooping aerobatics the skylark flies with. Being carefree might indicate a lack of experience.
Snakes shed their skins between two and four times as year and that could represent leaving behind the past and moving into the future.
Also, from the last source on the list below there's the cheetah, the tiger, and a couple of others that mention time.

turtle, the turtle is the symbol of long living. since long living comes within time it is also the symbol of time. tortoise is the symbol of boldness, because it is tough and strong which can also be a result to time/long living

The 2D spiral-like web of the orb weaver (spider) probably represents time and fate symbolically, more than any other animal icon.
