The 'Arthur' legend.....as it is known today.... is an altered story. It was altered in the middle ages by europeans ( most likely the english ). There was no 'lady of the lake' and there was no 'merlin' . There was a mighty sword though that Arthur carried. The true story of King Arthur is : he was the king of a vast empire that stretched from present day Ukraine - through Russia - through Latvia, Estonia, into Finland, Sweden and Norway. This ancient kingdom existed around 5,000 BC and was called Thule. The capital city of this kingdom was located in present day Norway. I cannot remember for sure what the name of the city was. The kingdom of thule went to war with other europeans from the south who were very primitive and barbaric compared to the people of thule. It is said that Arthur fell in love with another woman and hence betrayed his queen and his kingdom. The day before Arthur rode off with his army to fight the barbarians to the south one last time ; he threw his sword into the ocean in a fit of rage. He did so because he was overcome with guilt over having betrayed his queen and kingdom and felt he no longer deserved to carry 'the mighty sword of thule'. It is said that the sword is still there in the water at the coast of norway. When the army of thule met the barbarians in battle a few days later ; arthurs army was defeated & arthur himself lost his life in the battle. The barbarians then overran the entire kingdom of thule & they completely wiped out all traces of its existence. It is said that, the barbarians were terrified by the strange advanced technology that they found when they entered thules capital city and that is why they completely wiped out all traces of thule. And that's the real story of Arthur passed down by word of mouth from ancient times to now. His greatest legacy is this : If your heart is pure you can lead an entire kingdom to its glory and you can serve your people well. But if your heart becomes impure your kingdom will fall and blow away to dust.

Mordred is a character in the Arthurian legend, known as a notorious traitor who fought King Arthur at the Battle of Camlann, where he was killed and Arthur fatally wounded.

Since Arthur is pure mythology, your question is better off in the Mythology section, or perhaps, Books and Authors.
