Semele, mother of Dionysus, the god of wine and madness.
Zeus's wife Hera (who was extremely jealous) appeared to Semele as an old woman and asked her how she knew she was really having an affair with Zeus. Hera told her that the only way to be sure was to see him in his true godly form. Before this, Zeus had offered Semele a wish, so she wished to see him in his true form. Zeus was reluctant, but he had promised her anything she wanted, so he did. When she saw him, she burst into flames. But not before Zeus managed to rescue his son from burning with his mother.
Later on, when Dionysus was older, he saved his mother from the Underworld and brought her up to Olympus where she was made a goddess and renamed Thyone.
