Did the Datil pepper come from menorca & do they still grow their?

Actually the datil was brought to the USA from the West Indies during the Colonial period (1565-1821). The traditional belief is that Minorcans fleeing Spain brought it with them, even though this is impossible because there were no Datils growing in the Mediterranean at that time. However, the Minorcans did give it it's name.
