This goes back to the idea of Circle magic - a holy barrier without beginning or end - represented as well by the wedding ring. Vampires were unholy creatures, damned by God, and therefore could not cross holy barriers. The home was considered to literally be a "circle of protection" in this case, and a vampire could not enter unless he had the invitation of the true owner of the property.

Of course, if vampires were real, which they're not, this barrier could be easily circumvented by burning the house down. In modern fiction a vampire brought to a halt at a threshold would simply pull out a gun and shoot the hero.

They don't want to be accused of trespassing.

Doors are considered holy barriers...Within that room or outside of that room...is a place. The door is the walkway to the other room. Kind of like in constantine when he asks her to leave the apartment, its because the door is a barrier. And she didnt have any doors in the apartment besides the entry. But after they're invited in..they can re-enter uninvited.

You're confusing vampires with the fairies from Eoin Colfer's "Artemis Fowl" series.

Someone's property was concidered holy in the time the first vampire stories were written. and vampires can't cross that barrier uninvited.
