What We Learn from Mythology

Students of the twenty first century can get an insight to the ancient cultures and society. It shows how people thought back then and how they explained for the things that happened. The stories tell us what they found interesting, how they interpreted their confusing world and it also shows us what values and concepts were important and powerful in ancient cultures. The myths have inspired artists and musicians as well, “Orpheus and Eurydice”, Orpheus made happiness within himself through music, and this could’ve inspired many people. The myths teach morals and life lessons. These stories are also said in any religion. Religion and mythology have a lot in common which can teach students how religion comes about. In mythology, the stories show how some people comprehend what goes on, even if it sounds absurd, the same happens often with religion. Some morals that have been shown through the myths is one that teaches you not to be conceited like in the story “Athene and Arachne”. It can also teach people to respect people of higher power and authority since in a lot of the stories that were told, the people had to respect the gods because they had the power. They all serve to let people know what some believe in story form rather than “law” form. We study mythology to understand how humans around the world have understood their place in the world, their relationship with gods, with nature and with other people.

A very good start! I would also work on this phrase: Today's Myth was yesteryear's reality. In fact much of what we now know about ancient cultures is because of their need to explain the world around them and to preserve the stories which best expressed these thoughts/concepts and even social construct. Archaeologist say that they can learn much about a culture by going through the garbage they left. Folklorists and Mythology majors learn much about ancient cultures by the stories, superstitions and Gods and Goddess they have left in written word as well as in art.

A very good precis on a part of humanity's culture that has existed (and continues to survive) throughout several thousand years of civilisation.

Just one suggestion, maybe you should point out that mythology still exists in the 21st century. There are a myriad of urban myths that permeate our modern society. Some just as banal as the ancient ones, but proving that mythology is still alive and doing quite well.

One thing I would watch is your assumption that the audience knows what you mean by "myth". You seem to be talking only of Classical Greek Mythology, but you use the general concept of "mythology" freely.

Mythology exists in every religion, dead or alive, and in every culture, so I would be specific which parts of your paragraph are on Greeks and which are on "myths" in a generalize sense.

Right now I would give you a B. Tales & Fables are built on myths, story just doesn't fit perfectly.
