Do you believe?
In 1995, while vacationing there after getting out of the Navy, my passport disappeared from my pocket while sleeping and I was forced to miss my flight home. They would not let me on the plane. A few days later, I found assistance to get a broadcast on one of the bigger radio stations in Cebu in hopes that someone may have found it. The next day, a small and very young girl turned it in to the radio station. I did not get to see her but was told by the station that her and her parents were just visiting Cebu from Manilla. The girl told them that a Dwende had brought it to her to hold on to it because they liked me alot and did not want me to leave. Her family were staying about 2-3 hours away from where I was at. During the next few days of reestablishing my way home, I was told by many when questioned, that many Dwende will play trickery on you if they like you, just for the sake of keeping you around. If they do not like you, they will find ways of hurrying your departure. Such as scratching you while sleeping, or even harming those you are with. Supposedly they are very small and resemble what you might picture as a Gremlin or maybe not quite that ugly.

Any thoughts on this?

Philippine folklore lists duwendes as our local version of dwarfs. There are two types of them: the white ones and the dark ones. The white duwendes are more friendly and helpful to humans. In some cases, there are those who claim that being a friend to a white duwende would bring you good fortune. The other type of duwende, the dark ones, are the mischievous and naughty ones. They love playing tricks on people. But beware if you accidentally hurt them, the reprisal is very annoying and sometimes destructive.

There is another type of miniature beings similar to duwendes. Philippine folklore calls them "nuno" or "nuno sa punso", our local version of earth gnomes or goblins. These are the creatures that you should be very careful of when visiting remote rural areas here in the Philippines. They can inflict very dangerous harm on people when you accidentally hurt them.

whoa!majority to the filipino catholic believed this..i also believed on this kind of creatures "dwende" is a dwarf in philippines i have experience like this when i was 9 until 13 y/o that is the year i found out it is a dwende when my family meet an illusionist in our town they pretty liked me and start to make a conversation about me and my personality they say ever since i born here in our old house there is a dwarf used to play with me and it live under the stairs thats why my mom said when i was little she always found me under our stairs.she also wonder why even if i fall from stairs i never cry and year passed by i guess around 11-12 when my relatives had a house blessing we stayed their night before the house blessing that night we sleep on the room together with my family and some cousins im not used to sleep early when i was on that age so i was just laying their wait for myself to get sleepy and then suddenly i heard somebody playing containers which made me get up on bed so i run out the room and went to the balcony to checked if someone is still awake i look down stairs but all the lights are turned off so i decided to go back to bed and then in the morning this thing used to happen to me in our place before i found out theres a "dwende" want to make friends to me i always had a red mark that looks like an ink on my body like on my arms/leg it is a big red stains that you cannot removed even when you take a bath or try to removed it with other ink removal form of chemical on that morning i have a big red mark on my leg so i showed it to my mom and asked my mom and also my cousins and other family member if somebody still awake on the night they say everybody is sleeping so i told my mom about the dwende again...that is really scary before but now..i used to it coz they're not harmful as what people think they're diff until now im 21 some "dwende" still making friends with me and again i dont it is also dwende b'coz when i started to work and have some friends during the training somebody approached me that she is seeing someone at my back i mean in a normal shadow aside from my own shadow she sees a bigger shadow that is not me that made me scare because she's not the only person told me about it so i was surprised because i never open to anybody a scary story like that...they say that somebody is guiding me so i dont have to worry...so what i advised to you man the next time you go back to that place try to talked to them only on your mind they'll gonna hear you and you'll gonna feel them you just have to trust your self.

it's all TRUEEEE!!! especially in non-city provinces!

there are other "mystical creatures?" besides duwendes! you're lucky they liked you... Heard a girl smoked behind a school building. Unfortunately for her, that was were the duwendes lived! After a while, this girl didn't go to school. We later found out that all of a sudden she just started having boils in her face, sort of peeling skin, just really bad skin. And they believed it was the duwendes doing.

There a loads of stories to tell, go search 'em!

it's pronounced DOO-WEN-DEH
