The brain is reduced to the most primal state and then it becomes very damaged. The zombies focus on the main factor of reproduce and eat. This causes them to gnaw and chew on the victims but they rarely "eat" them. They may consume some of the flesh but don't continue much after the heart stops. It fills both of their instincts at once then they continue to their next victim.

The same reason in horror films vampires only tend to suck the blood from people, in the original Bram Stoker book Dracula is supposed to have killed everything on the ship to England, including all the animals, and they find dead sheep before he takes a human victim on land. But dead sheep are not that scary, so in modern films they skip all the animal killing and go straight to the humans, thus making it scary. With Zombies the idea is they need 'living flesh' for the same reason we don't eat rotting meat, most animals hunt to eat, the zombies have been reduced to their animal base, but unlike lions they cannot digest rotting meat because they have human digestive systems. I'm sure if the zombies were smart enough to use refrigeration and packet meat then they would. The other idea is that the zombies were engineered by (the Government, a mad doctor or the Nazis) as a weapon to attack people, but then they escape. In regards to the question of them digesting the meat I think the idea is that they are too stupid to know any better, in fact because they can't digest it they are always hungry.

Zombie is snake god of voodoo cults in West Africa, Haiti, and the southern United States. There was no "flesh or brain" eating until Hollywood and the audiences hunger for gore brought script writers to write it into "horror" pictures. The early zombie movies dealt with The zombies created by Voodoo. They didn't make enough money. Therefore you might say money and audiences made zombies eat flesh and brains.

Zombies themselves(as well as their motives) tend to fluctuate drastically,I am a lover of horror and zombie flix especially,I probably have 50 or so dvds. In my observations, they hate the living, and they do indeed feel ravenous hunger, sometimes for brains, and usually living human flesh sometimes just to turn the living into more zombies. There is no real hardline rule..depends on the film for the most part.

Read a book by Max Brooks. They're fun. He says that zombies have a virus called Solanum, so they are not dead, they just live differently than we do. People debate wether or not the virus is alive, so the same debate is up for zombies.

To add to the horror of the tale. However in the movies there wasn't a whole lot left for them to eat since the cities were deserted and there was a dearth of vegetation and wildlife.

They are jealous of the healthy living. They want life. It's like animal enticnt, they kill the living because they know the livnig is going to kill them. Nobody really wants to be dead. They want to continue living as long as possible.
