It sounds like a quote from some book or other...it means that we will all laugh at people who are already beautiful but who try to make themselves more beautiful with makeup and clothes and fake things....imagine how beautiful a butterfly is...and then gild it (ad liquid gold)...it would be ridiculous.

Its from Shakespeare.

Come, let's away to prison:

We too alone will sing like birds I' the cage;

When thou dost ask me blessing I'll kneel down

And ask of thee forgiveness; so we'll live,

And pray, and sing, and tell old tales, and laugh

At gilded butterflies...

-- King Lear to daughter Cordelia

Not sure as to the meaning... ask an English professor.

my guess is that a gilded butterfly will look really pretty - but it can't fly.

Its about people who are already beautiful who try to make themselves even more attractive ( physically and socially ) but in doing so they lose all their abilities to do what the were meant to do and are now stuck, immobile and useless.
