If he didn't, how does that affect the story of the trojan war?

The story, for story it is, is probably a lot older than Homer. Homer, is likely to be a made up name for a legion of story tellers who played their craft across the MED aeons ago. Odysseus is one, if not the key, character in the yarn. He is certainly created along the lines of the flawed hero and as such is a made up character. Another sea yarn, The Cruel Sea, by Monsarrat filmed in 1953, uses many characters observed by the author during WW2 when he was at sea in corvettes. This book, although fiction, is an excellent portrayal of WW2 at sea and in no way detracts from the authenticity of detail. Just so, the Trojan conflict is echoed in the heroic writings of Homer.

Odysseus did exist and he was were he says he was as he told Eurmeus. He was in Egypt for those 8 years. This can be proved by archaeology of what he saw being Hades and the ghost of Heracles. Hades was the tomb of Inherkua if you go in it you are confronted by a three head hound in fact Anubis whose job in Egyptian thoughts was exactly that of Cerberus . 1,5 km further and you come to the Ramasseum of Ramasses III and on the right hand outside wall is the exact 9 reference points to that of how he describes Heracles ghost. Superi mose the constelation of Orion onto Ramasses and there you have the final point There he stood dark as night . The Odysseus and all it s monster can be found on the Nile and in Egypt. The Odyssey we get is in reality an alibi for Penelope. Whilst the first to sing Odysseus tale was Phemeus son of Terpes

Yes it is thought he did exist. I already gave a really detailed answer for the question on the Trojan War so I won't repeat myself.

im sure he existed, although it is probably highly likely that he was not nearly as great or clever a man as the story says
