Both are mythical creatures but why BOTH and not just one "horse" with a horn AND wings? A Hybrid! They keep cross breeding dogs and coming up with ridiculous names so why not have a unicorn x with pegasus and call it a pegacorn or a unisus

Which came first? pegasus or unicorns?

Pegasus came first. Pegasus was a creature from Greek mythology who was the child of Medusa and Poseidon. When Medusa was still a pretty girl she was raped by Poseidon and became pregnant, but soon after she was transformed into the snake-haired Gorgon we all know her by. Apparently monster women can't give birth so Pegasus was stuck inside her, unable to be born. When Perseus beheaded her, Pegasus sprang from her blood from her neck. His name comes from the Greek "pegai" meaning "springs of the Ocean" and "sus" meaning "bridled horse." He was featured heavily in other myths, especially the story of Bellephron who was given a magic girdle by the gods so that he may ride Pegasus and together they killed the Chimera. When Bellephron tried to fly Pegasus to the top of Mt. Olympus to see where the gods lived, the magic wore off and Pegasus bucked him off so that he fell to his death. In art it was often associated with the 9 Muses and a symbol for creative inspiration.

A unicorn does appear in ancient Greece but not in mythology. Rather ancient greek naturalists included descriptions of unicorns in natural histories, the earliest being Ctesias, who was from 5th century BC. This is 300 years after the first stories of Pegasus which appeared around approximately 8th century BC. These ancient Greek descriptions vary significantly from our own current notions of unicorn and were not uniform among authors. All of them do agree that it is an animal that exists in India. Our image of a unicorn started in medieval times. The medieval uniocorn is not simply a white horse with a horn, however, instead it has a billy-goat beard, lion's tail and cloven hooves. Some traits associated with traditional unicorns:

horn could neutralize poison and had aphrodisiac qualities

could only be tamed by a virgin, otherwise it was a fearsome beast, unable to be captured

it was a metaphor for purity and chaste love

mortal enemy of elephants. would use horn to pierce an elephant's belly if their paths crossed

A pegasus with a unicorn name actually has a name. It is referred to as an Pegacorn. But as it is a more recent development, it has no standardized mythology behind it.

The ancient Greeks thought unicorns were real, and lived in India (to be fair, there are quite a few things there that an ancient Greek would find an strange as a unicorn - like elephants), whereas Pegasus was always a mythological creature. Pegasus was also unique - it was a one-off horse that happened to have wings and flight.

Of course, unicorns don't actually exist, and modern interpretations give them healing powers and the ability to locate virgins and let said virgins ride them.

A cross between the two would be a winged unicorn, and the only reference to Pegasus would be if it was the offspring of the Pegasus.

There are actually more than just two types of mythical horses like the Hippogriffs, Hippocamps and Kelpie but these two are rather more known to many for their personal gracefulness and beauty yet also because of their differences as Unicorns were shy and rather a peaceful species which will turn their back and run off than to fight while they are also known to possess magical imbue from their horn where they can heals the wounds of injured, make themselves invisible as well as teleporting themselves from one place to another in a blink of an eye.

Yet Pegasus were more daring and dominant species which tend to be lead by their curiosity in spreading their wings on unknown territories while unlike the Unicorn which possess magical horn, the Pegasus are born with a pair of swan like wings which allow them to soar above the clouds where the danger comes with the combine weight of it hooves together with its fall which can kill almost anyone in a single dive.

The story of Pegasus come first in the Greece tales of Perseus then Hercules during the flourish time of Olympians while Unicorns were quite later after that where most of its tales rise from England and the far east.

Pegasus was an individual. Not a species of winged horses. Just a horse named Pegasus, or possibly the Pegasus.

Also I am pretty sure the idea of Pegasus is older than the unicorn. Except perhaps in China.
