I'm reading a book called The Heroes of Olympus but some of the roman terms are throwing my head everywhere. I've tried to google it but cant find anything does anyone know what this means

I'm a child of Rome, consul to demigods, praetor of the first legion'

also the main character remembers when he was young, it says this 'the day he'd been raised on a shield and proclaimed a praetor' does anyone have any idea what this could mean?

thanks for your help!

Praetor is the Roman equivalent of a General/commander. Seemingly the character desires to be a commander and perhaps die in combat ("raised on a shield" may = die in combat).

Pretty much exactly what it sounds like. He's Roman, born in Rome. He talks to the Demigods. He is a leader/commander/general/important person in the First legion. And the raised on a shield would just be a kind of initiation or choosing ceremony/celebration.

the mention of 'olympus' is greek of origin and anything 'roman' should not be included. the very best book i ever read was edith hamilton's 'the greek way' or 'the roman way'. these are older books written circa 1950s, but so well written that i can still recite and remember passages from her books. when i later took latin in college, i whipped out my oldie and mouldie copies of her books and made some remarkable connections.

as for the other things you need to know, i would suggest strongly that you access through the net, wikipedia.com . this site is a vast storage of info from a to z on everything so i can't believe that the greek/roman mythology isn't included within. also and FYI: the word, mythology, implies all within is a myth but that's not true. this was a real thing and a religion/way of life for people thousands of years ago. yeah, sure, stories within aren't any better than what's found in your friendly local bible or talmud, etc., but know what? these stories were and still are the building blocks for what came later. the ancient greeks certainly had a better handle on life than previously expected and are extremely interesting in reading.

romans copied many things greek, buildings, religion, etc., and made it their own with a roman twist. clever people, the romans knew a good thing when they saw it. they renamed the goods into latin appellations (names) and went from there. this is why olympus is not mentioned in roman texts. anyway, good luck. follow the wikipedia trail and off you go!

It means that Jason belongs to Rome, and was trained in the Roman way. Consul is the leader of a Roman legion and a praetor is just below it. Being raised on a shield in this book means that they have had a great victory in battle and are being proclaimed a leader of Rome.
